Perfectly Imperfect Project 1

Description

This is the 2nd instalment of the Perfectly Imperfect Project. This time, Tracy is the courageous lady who was kind enough to let me photograph her...

Here's what she had to say about it:

"I discovered a lump in my breast 7 years ago this month. I was lucky in many respects, due to mum having had breast cancer at 40 I was already having yearly checks and my next one was due in just 2 weeks. After professional examination, another lump was found and I had to make the decision of chunks of my breast cut out or going for a full mastectomy. I chose full mastectomy, this way, I knew the chances of getting it in that breast again were practically zero. Turns out I had made the right choice. During the operation a third lump was found. The little buggers can be devious!

I'm strangely proud of my war wounds and have never felt the need to cover them up. I tell any one inquisitive enough to ask that the indent at the top is a bullet wound. The larger indent was caused by necrosis and this is my 'shark bite', tho few people are privileged enough to see that one..."

I ask you to stop, think about this image, if you take a moment to really think about WHY this image exists and what this lovely lady went through, it makes you want to call your mum, your sister, your daughter and tell them that you love them. Does it make you, as a woman, want to check your breasts for lumps? It should.

I didn't do a no make-up selfie to raise awareness, I went to the root of the issue and I present you with this beautiful image as a reminder of our fragility and to show people that there's beauty in our 'flaws' and that we shouldn't shy away and hide them, but embrace them and be proud...

I just wonder why she tells people stories about bullet wounds and shark bites.  Cancer is far more deadly and takes even more courage and strength to fight than bullets and sharks.
